July 12, 2006: with Ariano of Technicali

In Studio Appearance from Ariano of Technicali (www.technicali.com)

LD & Ariano have a new record out in stores titled “A Thin Line.” Grab it. It’s outstanding. It features an all-star line up of LA independent hip hop guests, including LMNO, Chali2na, Akil, Rhetmatic, and a whole lot more. Not to be slept on. LD brings the heat with classic boom bap beats and on-point cuts, while Ariano rhymes tight in the pocket and with a head full of positive consciousness.

Ariano stopped by the studio to speak with us about his new album, drop some unreleased radio exclusives you won’t hear anywhere else, and blessed us with some freestyles. For the first hour of the show we played a bunch of cuts off the new album, he also played an unreleased cut with Jack Johnson and another one with U God of Wu Tang clan. We rapped about life, music, (stayed away from too much politics), and generally had a great time. Much love to our brother Ariano. Thanks for coming by.

And after he left Andy and I played a bunch of funk and backpacker hip hop. ...for a change.

Desert Heat Show with John Tripp - June 28, 2006

Well, as many of you who follow the fu know, I discovered a secret spot in the desert about a year and half ago. My man Manuel has a trailer parked on his property up on jacks. The thing is full front to back with records – most of which come from three different juke box distributors he bought out in the mid 90s. The records are in largely unsorted boxes and the music ranges from hundreds of copies of every Barbara Streisand record ever to a single copy of the 4th Coming’s “Dead Don’t Die Alive.”

After about 7 trips to his house to look through tens of thousands of 45s, we decided it was time to have an all desert heat show. John came over with a bunch of psych lps and some soul 45s, Andy brought the classic funk cuts, and I came with a random assortment of soul, funk and rock. We took turns putting down one track a piece. And this is the result. (I marked and E: for mine, J for John and … you guessed it A for Andy’s picks).

Tom Scott – Gotcha “Theme from Starsky & Hutch” (Epic) E

Herbie Hancock off of a flexi-disc

This is a tasty little rarity. This comes off of a flexi-disc promo where Herbie Hancock is demonstrating the features of the at-the-time new Fender Rhodes electric piano. At the end of the second side, he graces us with a little commentary and then a nice long excerpt from the main theme to "The Spook Who Sat By The Door." For those of you into blaxploitation flicks, I highly reccomend Spook, if you can get a hold of a copy... but that's a story for another day.
